What Is Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome?

Women undergoing egg freezing or IVF treatment receive hormone injections to stimulate the development of eggs in the ovaries.

In a small number of patients, the response may be overly strong, leading to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, OHSS.

Yun-I Fertility Center pharmacist Yu-Ling Chang explains that ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe according to symptoms.

Symptoms may include abdominal bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased urine output, and shortness of breath.

Most OHSS cases are mild and can be relieved through supportive care or by adjusting diet and lifestyle. Symptoms usually resolve within 1 to 2 weeks.

For moderate or severe cases, treatment at a hospital or clinic, or even hospitalization, may be required.

📝 Patients with mild OHSS can relieve discomfort through the following methods:

  1. Replenish fluids and electrolytes, especially with beverages that contain electrolytes.
  2. Maintain adequate nutrition, especially a high-protein diet.
  3. Keep moderate physical activity and avoid prolonged bed rest to reduce the risk of blood clots.
  4. Avoid strenuous exercise and sexual intercourse to prevent abdominal discomfort, ovarian cyst rupture, or ovarian torsion.
  5. If necessary, ask your doctor to prescribe medication to relieve discomfort, such as anti-nausea medication or pain relievers.

If you experience persistent and severe discomfort, please contact a medical facility as soon as possible so that professionals can provide medical assistance, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
