- What are ovarian cysts with fluid?
A “water cyst” is a common lay term for an ovarian cyst.
About 80% of these cysts are functional cysts, which are commonly known as follicular cysts or corpus luteum cysts.
This type of cyst usually occurs in women of reproductive age.
When an abnormal amount of fluid collects inside a follicle, it forms a follicular cyst. When fluid collects inside the corpus luteum, it forms a corpus luteum cyst.

Functional cysts are made up of normal ovarian tissue and fluid, so they are not very likely to cause infertility.
However, they may cause irregular ovulation, which can then affect the menstrual cycle.
Most ovarian cysts are asymptomatic and are usually discovered incidentally during ultrasound examination.
For small, asymptomatic, and benign ovarian cysts, treatment is usually not required, and doctors may recommend close monitoring.
However, for large cysts, cysts causing symptoms, or cysts suspected to be malignant, further evaluation and treatment may be needed.
